What this actually involves

Smart home projects go wrong when people buy the gadgets first and think about the system afterwards. These are the places worth starting.

Lighting

Switches rather than bulbs wherever possible, so the light still works when someone flicks the wall switch out of habit.

Thermostats

Sensible scheduling and remote control. In a Bakersfield summer this one pays for itself faster than anything else on the list.

Video doorbells

See and speak to whoever is at the door from anywhere. Installed with proper power — including homes with no existing doorbell wiring — and recording before you close the front gate.

Smart locks

Keypad entry, remote unlock for deliveries, and codes you can hand out and revoke without cutting keys.

Voice and control

Alexa, Google or Apple — picked to match what you already own, then set up so the names make sense to everyone in the house.

Garage & gate control

Open, close and check the garage from your phone — and get an alert when it has been left open. Works with most existing openers.

The part that matters

The thing nobody mentions: your Wi-Fi has to be up to it

Every smart device you add is another thing leaning on the network. Most “the smart home keeps dropping out” calls we get are not a device fault at all — they are a router in a cupboard at one end of the house trying to reach a lock at the other.

We look at coverage before adding devices, because a smart home built on weak Wi-Fi will frustrate you every single day. If the network needs work first, we will say so rather than sell you more gadgets.

From a real job

This is what a well-built smart home looks like behind the scenes

One rack, built and wired by us: video distribution, audio zones, network and control — every cable terminated, labelled and dressed. When it is built like this, the system in the house just works, and the next person to open the cabinet says thank you.

Most smart home problems trace back to a closet full of spaghetti. We do not do spaghetti.

We had them install 3 Ring security flood light cameras. They were able to make our appointment the next day, showed up on time and completed the work quickly. Also installed a Ring Chime device with the cameras. Very happy with the work.

Excellent service. Called Kalieb Designs around 10 in the morning to inquire about their TV mounting services. He was very quick to respond and was able to come in to set up my TV and sound bar the same day. Work done is very professional and neat; definitely satisfied with the results. Price is also reasonable. Highly recommended!

Kalieb provided excellent service with such a positive attitude! He was even able to mount our 2 TVs on such short notice and just in time for Thanksgiving! We recommend Kalieb to everyone and will be calling him for our future projects.

Straight answers

Questions we get asked every week

Do I need to rewire the house?

Almost never. Most smart switches fit in the existing box, though some need a neutral wire. We check that first — it is the single most common reason a DIY smart switch install stalls halfway.

Which system should I buy into?

Usually whichever ecosystem your phones already use, because that is the one everyone in the house will actually use. We are not tied to a brand.

Will my family be able to work it?

That is the test we care about. We name everything sensibly, keep the number of apps down, and walk whoever is at home through it before we leave.

Can you install a video doorbell if I have no doorbell wiring?

Yes. Battery models work, but wired is better — and we can run proper power to the door either way. We are an authorized Ring partner and Nest dealer, so we will tell you straight which one fits your setup rather than pushing a brand.

Can you take over a half-finished system?

Yes. Tidying up a system that grew one gadget at a time is a large part of what we do here.
