The math behind the numbers
Size: the THX formula
The immersion maximum is distance in inches × 0.835 — THX’s published formula for a ~40° viewing angle. The “everyday” pick sits near distance ÷ 1.5, between the SMPTE 30° cinema standard and the THX max. Full reasoning in our TV size guide.
Height: eye level, not gallery level
Screen center at seated eye level (~42″ for most couches). The calculator converts your screen size into real 16:9 dimensions and gives the bottom-edge height — the number you actually need on install day. Reasoning in the mounting height guide.
The fireplace check: THX’s 15° rule
Your line of sight should rise no more than 15 degrees to the screen center. Distance buys forgiveness — the calculator does the trigonometry for your exact room and tells you when a tilting or pull-down mount is the honest fix.
