Three wires, three very different ceilings

“High-speed internet” can arrive at your house three physical ways: a coax cable originally built for cable TV, an old copper phone line (DSL), or a strand of glass fiber carrying light. The wire decides your ceiling — not the plan you pick from the brochure.

The one-line version: fiber is the modern standard, cable is a very capable middle age, and DSL is a retirement party. Add cell-tower home internet and satellite for the places wires don’t reach, and that’s the whole menu.

How each one actually works

Same internet on the other end — completely different physics getting it to you.

  1. Cable (coax): fast down, modest up, shared with the block

    The screw-on TV cable, running a system called DOCSIS. Modern DOCSIS 3.1 delivers gigabit-class downloads, but uploads ride a narrow return lane — commonly 10–35 Mbps — and the bandwidth is shared with your neighborhood node, which is why evenings can sag. A next-generation upgrade (DOCSIS 4.0) promises multi-gig symmetrical over the same wire and is rolling out across the country through 2026–27.

  2. DSL: the phone line's last act

    Internet over the copper telephone pair, invented to squeeze life out of century-old wiring. Speed falls off with every foot of distance from the phone company’s equipment — close-in homes might see 100 Mbps, far ones single digits. It’s being retired industry-wide; AT&T stopped selling new DSL back in October 2020. If DSL is your only option, check 5G home internet and Starlink before settling.

  3. Fiber: light through glass, and the wire wins

    Data as pulses of light through a glass strand: symmetrical speeds (uploads equal downloads), the lowest latency of any connection type, immunity to electrical interference, and headroom measured in decades — today’s networks already sell 5–10 Gbps over it. If fiber reaches your address at a similar price, the decision is already made.

Both have gotten dramatically better — with one giant exception to avoid.

5G home internet

A cellular modem in a box — T-Mobile and Verizon sell it around $50–$75/mo. Real speeds swing with tower distance and congestion, which is why the carriers quote ranges instead of numbers. Excellent for renters; always test it at your address during evening hours.

Starlink (low-orbit satellite)

Thousands of satellites a few hundred miles up: roughly 100–300 Mbps with ~20–40 ms latency — low enough for calls and gaming. Heavy storms can dent it briefly. The fix for rural addresses that wires forgot, and a proper roof mount makes or breaks it.

Geostationary satellite

HughesNet and Viasat orbit 22,000 miles out, adding roughly 600 ms of delay — video calls lag painfully and gaming is off the table. Choose it only when literally nothing else reaches the property.

Quick answers

Does cable internet mean worse Netflix than fiber?

No — streaming is all download, and cable downloads are plenty. Where cable shows its age is uploads (video calls, security cameras, cloud backup) and evening congestion. If your household is download-only, cable is honestly fine.

Is DSL ever still worth keeping?

Only when nothing else reaches you — and these days 5G home internet or Starlink usually does. The industry is actively retiring DSL, so treat it as a bridge, not a destination.

Fiber costs the same as my cable plan. Is switching worth the hassle?

Yes. Same price buys you uploads as fast as downloads, lower latency, and a connection that doesn’t care what the neighbors are doing at 8 pm. This is the rare upgrade with no real trade-off.

My whole building only has coax. Am I stuck?

You’re on cable for the wire, but not stuck: 5G home internet ignores the building wiring entirely, and cable’s own DOCSIS 4.0 upgrade will eventually raise the ceiling on the coax you already have.
