A TV needs protection — from more than lightning
People picture a lightning strike, but most surges are smaller and come from your own house: the AC compressor, the pool pump, the refrigerator kicking on and off send voltage spikes down the same circuits your TV shares, and the grid itself sags and surges. A good surge protector soaks those up before they cook the board inside a modern TV or receiver. Here is what to look for so you buy protection, not a fancy power strip.
Check the joule rating — higher is better
The joule number is a lifetime budget the protector spends absorbing spikes. For a TV and AV gear, aim for at least 1,000–2,000 joules, more for a full home theater. No joule rating listed? It is not a surge protector.
Know a power strip from a surge protector
A $5 power strip just splits one outlet into six with zero protection. A real surge protector has voltage-clamping components inside, a joule rating, a UL 1449 listing, and usually a connected-equipment warranty.
Protect at the panel and at the TV
The best setup is layered: a whole-home protector at the electrical panel stops the big surges at the door, and a point-of-use protector at the TV catches the smaller in-house spikes and backs it up. Either alone helps; together they actually save the gear.
Watch the status light — and replace after a hit
