How to get Wi-Fi to a detached garage or shop

An extender pointed at the back wall almost never does it. Here are the ways that actually reach a separate building — ranked by how well they hold up.

Give it a real link, not a hop

A separate building needs a real connection back to the router

The reason the $40 extender never fixes the garage is simple: it can only rebroadcast a signal it already receives, and after crossing the yard and a set of exterior walls there is barely a signal left to grab — and what is left, it halves. Getting Wi-Fi to an outbuilding means running a real link out there and putting a proper access point at the far end. Here are the ways that work, best first.

  1. Best: buried cable to an access point

    Run Cat6 in conduit from the house to the garage and mount an access point inside — now the shop has its own strong Wi-Fi, not a faint echo of the house’s. Cat6 carries a full gigabit up to about 100 metres (328 feet). Conduit costs a little more than direct-burial cable but lets you pull new lines later without digging again.

  2. For distance or safety: fiber

    Farther than ~300 feet, or you want to be safe about lightning and grounding between two buildings? Fiber is the answer — it goes much farther and, being glass, it cannot carry an electrical surge from one structure to the other. It is the cleanest way to link separate buildings.

  3. No trenching? A point-to-point wireless bridge

    When you cannot dig, a pair of point-to-point bridge radios — one on the house, one on the garage, aimed at each other with clear line of sight — beams a solid link across the gap. It is far more stable than an extender because it is a dedicated link, not a shared hop off your indoor Wi-Fi.

  4. Skip powerline — and always add an AP at the far end

    Powerline adapters usually fail to a detached garage because it is fed by its own subpanel or run the signal will not cross. And whichever link you use, finish with an access point in the building — the link gets the internet out there; the AP turns it into real Wi-Fi you can actually use.

Distance, line of sight, and what’s in the ground decide it

Three things pick the method. Distance: under ~300 feet with a path to trench, buried Cat6 is the best value; beyond that, fiber. Line of sight: if you can see the garage roof from the house eave, a wireless bridge is quick and clean; if trees, a fence or another structure block the view, a bridge will be flaky and you want a cable. What’s already in the ground: an existing empty conduit or a spare trench for a new subpanel is a gift — we piggyback on it. Fiber sidesteps it entirely.
