Mesh Wi-Fi is several radios sharing one network name, handing your phone off room to room. It is the right cure for exactly one disease: parts of the house the router can’t reach. A single well-placed modern router still covers most single-story homes under about 2,000–2,500 square feet just fine.
You are a mesh candidate if you have a two-story layout, 2,500+ square feet, thick plaster or stucco walls, a detached garage or casita, or one stubborn corner where video calls go to die. If your whole house is slow everywhere — that’s a plan or provider problem, and a mesh kit won’t move it.
Badly placed mesh performs worse than one good router. These four rules are the difference.
A node repeats whatever signal it receives. Put it in the weak corner and it faithfully rebroadcasts weakness. The rule: halfway between router and problem area, where signal is still strong. This one placement mistake causes most “mesh didn’t help” stories.
Nodes talk to each other over a radio band or an Ethernet cable. Wired backhaul is the gold standard — every node delivers full speed instead of spending half its airtime relaying. Running that cable through the attic is a one-hour job for us and upgrades the whole system permanently.
If your provider’s gateway keeps routing while the mesh routes too (double NAT), gaming, cameras and port-sensitive apps get weird. Put the ISP box in bridge/passthrough mode and let the mesh be the router.
Every wireless hop adds delay. Most homes are fully covered by two or three well-placed nodes; extra nodes past that usually make things worse, not better.

For a new system, yes — prices are reasonable and the 6 GHz band plus smarter congestion handling age well. Ripping out working Wi-Fi 6 just for the number? No.
Google/Nest Wifi has had no Wi-Fi 7 successor and the line has gone quiet — still updated, hard to recommend for a new install when the alternatives are this good.

In the rooms that had weak signal, dramatically — because the bottleneck there was Wi-Fi. Rooms that already had strong signal won’t speed up: your internet plan sets that ceiling. Mesh is a coverage tool, not a speed tool.
Extenders are the budget bandage: they usually halve throughput and often create a second network name your phone clings to at the wrong time. For one small dead spot they can do; for real coverage, mesh is the grown-up answer.
Yes — in bridge mode, passing routing duties to the mesh. Running both as routers (double NAT) is the classic hidden gremlin behind flaky cameras and gaming issues.
As central and as high as practical, out in the open — not the garage corner where the ISP tech left it. Sometimes relocating the main router solves the “dead zone” without buying anything, which is a conversation we’re happy to have for free.
