Run a speed test that actually means something
“The internet is slow” is three different problems wearing one coat: the plan, the router, or the distance. One structured test tells you which.
Test wired at the router
Laptop on an Ethernet cable straight into the router, other downloads paused, test two or three times. This number is what your ISP actually delivers. If it is far below the plan you pay for, the problem is upstream — that is a call to the provider, armed with your numbers.
Test on Wi-Fi, next to the router
Same spot, no cable. The gap between this and the wired number is your router’s Wi-Fi ability. A big gap on a router from 2016 is expected — older Wi-Fi generations physically cannot carry a modern plan (the Wi-Fi Alliance literally renamed them: Wi-Fi 4 and 5 are the old ones, Wi-Fi 6 and up are current).
Test at the problem spot
The couch, the back bedroom, the office. The gap between step 2 and step 3 is pure distance and walls — and it is the most common gap of all: you pay for 500, get 480 at the router, and 60 on the couch. That is not an ISP problem; that is a coverage problem.
Repeat once in the evening
Fine at 10 AM, crawling at 8 PM on the wired test is neighborhood congestion — genuinely the ISP’s side. Same evening slowdown only on Wi-Fi is your own airwaves getting busy.
Benchmarks worth knowing
The FCC’s current definition of real broadband is 100 Mbps down / 20 Mbps up — below that, a modern household feels it. For perspective on what activities need: a 4K stream wants roughly 15–25 Mbps, HD video calls single digits, and gaming barely any bandwidth at all — gaming cares about latency, which no speed number shows. A family of four streaming, calling and gaming simultaneously is comfortable on 200–300 Mbps delivered where they sit — which is the whole point of testing by location.
In the order we’d try them at your house
Restart modem and router properly
Both off, thirty seconds, modem first, router two minutes later. Months of uptime genuinely degrade cheap routers.
Move the router
Out of the cabinet, off the floor, away from the microwave and fish tank, as central as the wiring allows. Free, and often worth more than a plan upgrade.
Count the years
Router older than ~5–6 years on a fast plan = the bottleneck is the box, not the service. A current Wi-Fi 6 router is a bigger real-world upgrade than the next plan tier.
Fix coverage with mesh, not a pile of extenders
A single extender patches one dead room (and old single-radio ones halve the speed they relay); a mesh system with 2–3 nodes gives one seamless network across the house. For Bakersfield’s single-story ranch layouts, one node at each end usually blankets everything.
Check the wire outside the wall
On cable internet, corroded fittings, tight staples and old splitters quietly eat speed. If the wired-at-router test is low and the ISP swears the street is fine, the drop and splitters are the next suspects — we see it constantly on older Bakersfield houses.

I pay for 500 Mbps and get 80 on my phone — am I being cheated?
Test wired at the router first. If the cable shows ~500, the ISP is delivering; the 80 is your Wi-Fi's ability at that distance, fixed with router placement, a newer router, or mesh — not with an angrier phone call.
Does everyone streaming at once really slow it down?
Each 4K stream takes a real slice, but do the math: four streams is under 100 Mbps. On a 300+ plan, simultaneous streaming rarely explains slowness — old Wi-Fi delivering a fraction of the plan usually does.
Is 5 GHz always better than 2.4?
5 GHz is faster but shorter-ranged; 2.4 goes farther through walls but slower and more crowded. Modern routers juggle both automatically — if yours makes you pick per device, that itself is a sign it's aging out.
