A dead zone is geometry, not a slow plan

Before anyone buys a mesh, the dead spot in the back bedroom is usually distance and walls beating a router that is sitting in the worst possible place — a closet, the floor, or the corner by the front door where the cable happens to enter. Work these in order and half of homes never need new hardware at all.

  1. Move the router central and high

    Wi-Fi spreads outward and slightly down. A router central to the house and up on a shelf, out in the open, covers far more than one hidden in a cabinet or on the floor. Even moving it a room over toward the center can wake up a dead zone for free. Keep it away from big metal, mirrors, and the microwave.

  2. Know your two bands

    Your router broadcasts 2.4 GHz (slower, reaches far, punches through walls) and 5 GHz (fast, short range, weak through walls). In a far room a device clinging to 5 GHz will stall. Most modern routers pick automatically, but confirm both bands are on — a far bedroom often just needs the 2.4 GHz reach.

  3. Test, don’t guess

    Walk the house with a free signal-strength app and watch where it falls off a cliff. That tells you whether one node in the right spot fixes it, or the layout needs two — and it stops you buying gear for the wrong corner.

  4. Add coverage the right way

    Still short? A mesh system (one network name, seamless hand-off) beats a cheap extender (second name, half speed). And the gold standard for a stubborn dead zone is a wired node — an ethernet run to a second access point in the dead area, which never depends on a wireless hop.

Why the cheap extender often disappoints

The $30 extender is tempting, but here is what it actually does: it grabs your existing Wi-Fi and rebroadcasts it — usually on a separate network name, and often at half the speed, because it is talking to the router and your device on the same radio. It can rescue one dead corner, but it rarely feels like “whole-home Wi-Fi.” A mesh uses one seamless network and smarter hand-off between nodes, which is why it is the right answer for most houses. And when a room absolutely has to be rock-solid — a home office, a media room, a detached space — a wired backhaul to a second access point beats everything, because it removes the wireless weak link entirely.
