A fireplace mount lives or dies on height, heat, and the anchor
Over a fireplace is one of the most requested TV spots — and the one that goes wrong most. Not because it is dangerous, but because three quiet decisions get skipped: how high the screen ends up, how much heat reaches it, and what is actually behind the wall to hold it. Get those right and it is a showpiece. Here is the order we work through on every fireplace install.
Check the heat before anything else
Put your hand flat where the bottom of the screen will sit, then run the fire the way you actually use it for 20–30 minutes. Most TVs are rated to roughly 95–104°F. Warm is fine; uncomfortable is not. A deep mantel already blocks most rising heat — a flush firebox with no mantel is the one to respect.
Decide the height honestly
Eye level when seated is about 42–48 inches to the center of the screen. A fireplace usually forces it higher. If the center lands much above 60 inches, a flat mount will have you craning — that is where a tilting or pull-down mount earns its money, dropping the picture to eye level while you watch and tucking it back up when you are done.
Match the anchor to the wall
Drywall above the firebox: into the studs, no exceptions. Solid brick or stone: masonry anchors set into the brick face (not the mortar lines) rated well past the TV’s weight. A stone veneer over studs is its own case — we probe it before drilling so the mount lands on something real.
Plan the wire route last
On drywall we run power and HDMI in-wall to an outlet beside or below the mantel — nothing visible. On solid masonry we use a slim raceway color-matched to the wall. Cords never cross the firebox opening.
The height problem is real — and fixable
The single most common fireplace-TV complaint is not heat — it is a sore neck. A screen mounted flat above a mantel can sit 65–72 inches to center, and after a two-hour movie you feel it. There are three honest answers: mount it as low as the mantel allows and accept a slight upward glance for casual viewing; use a tilting mount so the face angles down toward the couch; or fit a pull-down mount that swings the whole TV down and forward to true eye level, then returns it flush. Pull-downs cost more and need solid backing, but in a room where the fireplace is the only wall for the TV, they turn a compromise into the best seat in the house. It is fine when two things are true: the mantel or a heat deflector keeps the screen out of the rising heat, and the height keeps your neck comfortable. A pull-down mount solves the height; a hot wood fire needs a heat check first.
